Student Materials: Please bring the following: - 1 or 2 terrycloth old hand towels - A magnifying device, such as an OptiVISOR or reading glasses, may be helpful for detail work. OptiVISORs are also available in the studio, if needed. - Safety glasses. (If you wear glasses, try 3M Eyeglass Protectors, #47030, that fit comfortably over glasses -- available at building-supply stores.) Safety glasses are also available in the studio, if needed. - It is recommended to use a particle dust mask (3M #8233 or rated equivalent) when using a polisher and grinder in the Jewelry studio. The mask can be purchased from Rio Grande, item #201-654 (1-800-545-6566 or www.riogrande.com). You may also find them at your local hardware store. - Ear plugs are available in the craft shop for a small fee should you need them. - Black, fine-point Sharpie pen - Notebook and pen - Something to tie your hair back with, if applicable - Apron or old clothes, recommended - Non-flammable clothing and close-toed shoes, recommended NOTE: The fluctuating cost of metals used in this class may result in changes to the estimated materials fees at the time the class is run.
School Fee & Materials: instructor fee $125-$150 hammers and some other metal working tools
Instructor Materials: vitreous enamel 26 and 36ga copper torches and firing stands fuel texturing and sifting tools

Explore sifting, stenciling, corrugation, fold forming, and high fire enameling. Also, try torch firing enamels and set them in interesting traditional and nontraditional ways. All levels welcome. $

Steve Artz is a master carpenter by trade and has been an exhibiting enamelist since discovering the luscious medium while attending San Diego State University in 1975. He is well-known for his innovative approach to fusing glass to metal and inventive ways of texturing metal. Steve is a working member and past president of the San Diego Enamel Guild, past trustee of the Enamelist Society, and past president of Enamel Guild West. He has taught at the Folk School since 1998.

Barbara Joiner has taught clay and jewelry classes for over 40 years. She studied clay at the University of Illinois, silversmithing at Indiana University, and she has an MFA degree from Southern Illinois University. Barbara's work is in many collections, including the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and has won numerous awards throughout the U.S. She is a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild and is the Folk School's Resident Artist in Jewelry & Metals.
