Student Materials: Please bring the following: - Favorite photos. We can enlarge or reduce on the copy machine to the proper size. Some photos will work better than others; pictures with a higher contrast of the object and background work well. Some enamels may contain small amounts of hazardous materials. A particle dust mask is recommended (available at hardware stores). The Folk School has all the tools needed, but students are responsible for replacement cost of any broken or lost tools. Any classes requiring etchants or fuels, such as MAPP gas or acetylene, will be charged a fee for the amount used. There will be copper and steel enamel squares and rectangles in varying sizes available for purchase in the studio, along with enamels and decal paper. Cost will vary depending on the number of pieces made and the size of your projects (the larger, the higher).

In this fun process, copy the photos–they will not be harmed–to make decals, then fire them into enamel for a sepia-tone finish. Experiment with “colorizing” with sifted enamels, colored washes, or paints applied under and over the images. This is a great class for beginners, but all levels are welcome. $

Sheryl Koch has been working in stained glass since 1973, has been a full-time glass and kaleidoscope artist since 1980, and is now Studio Assistant for the Folk School's glass program. Her work is featured nationally and internationally in galleries, museums, and kaleidoscope books. Sheryl is well known for her brass turning-wheel kaleidoscopes. She also does commissioned stained glass for individuals, as well as church windows. Born and raised in the Southwest, she moved to Brasstown in 2004 where she continues her work of many colors, which has expanded into enameling. She loves the many facets that enameling offers.
