Jan Bouterse was born and educated in the Netherlands where his family emphasized both an "old world" work ethic and a thoroughly modern entrepreneurial spirit. He came to the U.S., married, and soon began Hardwood Designs, a high-quality cabinet shop in Hillsborough, NC. He eventually sold his thriving shop and then worked as a quality certification inspector for the Architectural Woodwork Institute. He now spends much of his time in his shop, building furniture and working at his lathe. His hobbies are fly fishing, sailing, and (no surprise here) woodworking.

David G. Jones has a degree in product design from North Carolina State University. He retired from a career in home inspection and building in 2015. Although he has been a woodworker for many years, he first fell in love with woodturning while taking a class at the Folk School with instructor Nick Cook. David became a member of Chapel Hill Woodturners and advanced his skills rapidly while turning every week. David teaches woodturning workshops at Chapel Hill Woodturners and currently serves as vice president of the club.
