Student Materials: Please bring the following: -Apron -Pair of long kitchen rubber gloves -A pair of fabric scissors will be nice to have. (Optional) -May also bring additional washed cotton t-shirts or other natural fibers for dyeing. -Sun hat
School Fee & Materials: - Face masks (particle) or respirators for students who do not bring - Rubber gloves, for those who don't bring - Safety glasses, for those who don't bring
Instructor Materials: All mordants, dyes, cloth, and all the surface design supplies that will be needed. - Thread, pattern making equipment, a few additional sewing machines. If we have 1 machine for every 2 people minimum, I can bring 3 sewing machines.
Equipment Needs: Wet Room set up -borrow 2 sewing machines from Quilting/sewing for student use

Discover the vibrant world of plant-based dyes grown in Western North Carolina. Explore how locally grown plants can produce a full rainbow of hues. Identify dye plants and understand how to incorporate them into a home landscape, including best growing conditions, harvesting methods, and storage practices.Through guided experimentation, gain confidence working with dye recipes on both protein and cellulose. Experience multiple mordanting and natural dyeing techniques, including eco-printing, indigo shibori, and surface design. Create a comprehensive sample book documenting your results, along with a collection of naturally dyed cloth suitable for a simple garment, quilt, or art piece. All levels welcome.

Melanie Wilder Melanie is a weaver, natural dyers, and explorer of material and process. She has spent the past 20+ years dedicated to learning and teaching, living in the Asheville, NC area where she currently runs the fiber program at Warren Wilson College. She is interested in exploring how process crosses into our daily lives, and how intentional choices can hlep shape our footprint on the future. This involves the yearly rhythm of growing fibers and dyes and how the textiles made from these plants creates ritual and meaning.
