Handcrafted–Fair Isle Inspired Handspun/Hand Knit

Create a "fleece palette" from renewable dye sources. Combine these colors with natural, Shetland sheep shades and produce an array of solid and heathered yarns to personalize your knitting. Spin typical and less-than-typical yarns and get stranded Fair Isle technique firmly “in hand” as you experience an exciting use of color–carrying only two colors per row. Lessons on wheel adjustment, combing, carding, color blending, plying, and consistency included. Sample fabric cutting and finishing, then make, measure and plan. For ambitious spinsters able to happily spin a continuous yarn; beyond beginner skills in knitting requested. This is not a how-to spin/knit class.

Martha Owen is Creative Programming Advisor in spinning, knitting, felt making, dyeing and surface design, at the Folkschool Her adventure in spinning and natural dyeing began at this very school in 1978. She has been teaching since 1984. (She taught her first class of thirteen with a one month old nursling in a wind up swing as her assistant. That baby is now 39! ) Since 1980 her extended family has included wool sheep and angora rabbits . Also a banjo player and known to tell a story or two, Martha's interest in sheep and wool, music and dance has carried her literally and joyfully around the world. Her children say she is a wool nerd but her sheep say she is out-standing in her field!
