Student Materials: Please bring the following: -Painter's tape (1" wide or less) -Scotch tape -Scissors -Ruler (preferably one that starts at 0”) -Black Sharpie marker -Notebook and pen -Transparent beads, glass & other assorted goodies (also available in class) -1 or 2 old hand towels -Packing material to take your kaleidoscopes home -Reading glasses, may be helpful for detail work. OptiVISORs are also available in the studio, if needed. -Safety glasses. (If you wear glasses, try 3M Eyeglass Protectors, #47030, that fit comfortably over glasses -- available at building-supply stores.) Safety glasses are also available in the studio, if needed. -A particle dust mask (3M #8233 or rated equivalent) is advised when using the polisher in the Jewelry studio. -Apron (if desired) -Something to tie your hair back with, if applicable -Close-toed shoes, recommended -Materials fee will depend on the number of scopes you make and materials selected NOTE: The fluctuating cost of metals and glass used in this class may result in changes to the estimated materials fees at the time the class is run. Immerse yourself in a week of creativity, craftsmanship, and wonder as you explore the art–and science–of kaleidoscope making. Gain essential skills like precise glass and mirror cutting, shaping glass stringers, designing magic chambers, and etching and finishing metal or other tubes. Learn to build rotating ends, experiment with different mirror systems, and play with etched exteriors. Leave with beautiful, high-quality scopes and the confidence to keep making more. All levels welcome. $

Melissa Triplett is a lifelong creator, drawn to the beauty of transformation through creativity. She took her first class at John C. Campbell Folk School in 1996, continuing a family tradition of learning, teaching, and craftsmanship. For her, making anything is more than a skill—it is a way to reconnect with and bring creativity into daily life, and see the world through a new lens. With an undergraduate degree in Accounting from Western Carolina University and a Master’s in Business from NC State, Melissa has always been fascinated by the interplay of structure and creativity, precision and flow. Kaleidoscopes are the perfect embodiment of this balance—rooted in geometry and science, yet unfolding into ever-changing beauty and magic. Melissa’s passion lies in pattern design, metal etching, and glasswork, crafting kaleidoscopes that invite wonder and joy.
