Student Materials: Please bring the following: - 1 or more chairs/rockers/footstools with structure & finish in good condition. Many students, even beginners, complete 2+ projects - Experienced caners may bring their own tools and materials NOTE: Contact instructor 4 weeks in advance with photos of the projects & list of materials & tools they will bring. Although you may have some of the necessary tools, a set of tools & supplies needed for each individual project will be available from the instructor for a fee.
Instructor Materials: Tools, materials, and supplies anticipated for all common styles of chair caning. (Instructor needs to order materials about 3 weeks prior to class, and will bring an assortment of extra materials, tools and supplies for late-enrolling students.)
Equipment Needs: - Standard-height work tables to accommodate two students per table, plus a chair for each student. - Water source or buckets in which to wet cane - Chair seats tools - Standing mats

Description

Reclaim old chairs, rockers, and footstools whose backs and bottoms have seen better days. Learn techniques used by generations of craftspeople to transform family heirlooms and flea market finds into useful treasures. Work with common seat materials including binder cane, French cane, fiber rush, flat reed, and pressed cane, depending on the chair(s). Bring one or two projects–structurally sound and surface finished–to work on in a supportive, mindful environment. All levels welcome.

Jack Worrill is originally from Atlanta, GA, and a graduate of Georgia Tech. He began caning chairs professionally after thirty-five years in the printing and advertising business. He has repaired, restored, and recaned chairs, rockers, and wicker pieces of all types for customers from Texas to South Carolina since 1996 under the name Jack Worrill, Chair Man. During that time, he has taught classes to all ages of aspiring caners, many of whom have developed the craft into a marketable skill. Jack is currently living in Knoxville, TN.
