Karen Marie Portaleo is a sculptor currently working in Atlanta. Her chosen mediums range from clay to chocolate. Her clay work has appeared in various publications including 500 Teapots, 500 Figures In Clay and Confrontational Clay. She has work in two permanent museum collections in RAM in Racine, Wisconsin, and the Teipei County Yingge Ceramics Museum in Teipei, as well as other notable collections. She has taught sculpture in 25 countries and is currently teaching at The Chastain Arts Center and The Spruill Center for the Arts, both in Atlanta. She holds a BFA in Fine Arts from The Atlanta College of Art. Her current work pulls from her Sicilian heritage and her time living in the south, which has been most of her life, creating imagery that combines the Sicilian Moor’s Head pottery and the southern traditions of face jugs. She works in her home studio, where she does her best to keep her dog Pigeon away from the fragile greenware.
