Student Materials: Please bring the following: - A basic T-shirt, a classic button-up woven shirt, and 1-2 other garments of your choice to make patterns of - Muslin or other fabric to test your pattern - A pencil, eraser, and a few different colored pencils or pens - A roll of paper at least 18" wide. Light-colored or white paper is best, but brown kraft paper is ok - Ball Head sewing pins & magnetic pin holder. All-purpose and fine dressmaker size - Grid Quilting rulers and curved dress maker ruler or french curve - Dressmaker’s tape measure - Fabric chalk or chalk pencils - Sewing machine & basic sewing supplies (some machines available)

Description

Delve into the fascinating world of pattern making by learning to create sewing patterns directly from existing garments. Start with a simple T-shirt to grasp the basics, then a woven shirt to learn essential elements like closures, darts, pockets, and other pattern making fundamentals. Next, test and perfect your pattern by making a muslin. Finally, copy a garment of your choice including pants and knitwear. Leave with a complete pattern for your garments as well as detailed instructions.

Mary Earle-Sigler graduated with a BFA in Fashion Design, interned with NYC designer Kenneth Richards, and worked as a tailor for Colonial Williamsburg’s Costume Department. While raising a family she taught art and sewing to middle schoolers and started The Daily Sew website and YouTube channel to spread the joy and practicality of sewing. She loves helping people learn everything from a simple repair or project to advanced garment construction and fitting.
