Student Materials: Please bring the following: - 1" to 1 1/8" plastic rings from a brand like Dritz or Sew-Ology. These come in small packages that can be found at most large craft stores, or you can purchase them online. Each ring has the potential to make a single button so bring a pack for the weekend. You could also purchase different sizes if you'd like to experiment. - Personal magnification (glasses or a magnifying light-optional. The studio has lights for class use.)
School Fee & Materials: FOLK SCHOOL FEE: $5 per person Perle cotton in a variety of colors

Are your sweaters languishing in the closet? Does your handmade book need a finishing touch? Use a needle, thread, and some plastic rings to create buttons all your own! Explore stitched and wrapped techniques as you learn a variety of historic and contemporary styles including the Dorset Crosswheel and Evening Star. Also, learn how to make a simple book structure to display and label your new creations. Magnification and some experience with needle and thread is helpful, but not required.

Tammy Elwell is an avid crafter and dancer who grew up in Oak Park, MN. Tammy has worn many hats around the Folk School campus, from Work Study, to Student Host, to Craft Shop Associate, Assistant Instructor, and now Instructor. Her passion for the school's model of non-competitive, lifelong learning greatly influences her teaching approach, and she is thrilled when she can teach beginners a brand-new skill. Tammy enjoys knitting, dancing, basketry, bead making, book arts, and broom making. Tammy has also taken classes and volunteered at North House Folk School in Grand Marais, MN and assisted in classes at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN.
