Student Materials: Please bring the following: - Required woodblocks, bamboo skins, and paper will be available for purchase for less than $35. - Students are encouraged to bring their own tools that they may already have. - If students are interested in purchasing their own kit (not required), see: https://www.imcclains.com/catalog/kits/japanesewoodblock.html. ***However, once again, as good (if not better) supplies will be available.*** - Strong readers or jeweler's wearable glasses are highly recommended. - For intermediate/advanced students— if you wish to bring pre-carved blocks, please contact John [email protected].
School Fee & Materials: - 2 rolls paper towels
Instructor Materials: The instructor will provide the tools and -most- of the materials needed for the course. The items available for use will include printing brushes, Tanuki barens, carving tools, and a myriad of other items too numerous to list.
Equipment Needs: Book and Paper Arts Studio - water - electricity - sink - tables - refrigeration (not crucial) - digital projector

This intensive course is designed as both an introduction to Japanese-style woodblock printmaking–mokuhanga–and a means to expand your printing practice. Learn carving and printing techniques along with other skills inherent to traditional, water-based, hand-printed Japanese practices. Due to time constraints, a selection of appropriate designs will be available to choose from. Intermediate levels welcome; prior experience in carving and/or printmaking is encouraged.

John Amoss is a professor emeritus with 25+ years experience in mokuhanga (Japanese woodblock) printmaking. He has studied and worked as a printmaker in Tokyo. His work has been exhibited in 5 continents and has won several international awards.
