Student Materials: Please bring the following: 1. An Old-Timey ear—Folks can learn and retain through practice, listening, and joy. 2. An open heart. 3. Binder/clipboard for handouts, pen/paper. 4. Your body and voice. 5. Shoes for stompin’ and shufflin’. 6. A tambourine with jingles and a head. Email [email protected] for ideas on where to buy. 7. (Optional) If you have an autoharp, banjo, bones, cello, fiddle, gourd, guitar, jug, kazoo, mandolin, tub bass, ukulele, washboard, bring it if you want! Equipment Needs: in addition to standard equipment in the studio (The music studio is equipped with 2 white boards, post-it flip chart, markers, instrument repair center, printer/copier, fully adjustable padded musician's chairs, seat cushions, stools, tables, etc.), instructor requests access to outside space (potentially Open House) ; buckets and water; one six-inch wide wood plank, jugs or cider/apple juice gallon/half gallon jars, plastic gallons, Wood burning tools, oil, masks, buckets, wood plank

Description

Try your hand (and feet!)at authentic Afrilachian rhythm and percussion traditions using body, bones, gourd, and headed tambourine. Decorate and play your own “vocal gourd”–a shekere without beads. Accompany these rhythms with music composed by, or part of, the repertoire of Bessie Smith, Bill Withers, Sid Hemphill, Andrew and Jim Baxter, and more. Do you play a stringed instrument, even just a little? Bring it! We’ll also chuck, pluck, sing, and jam out in jug band style. All levels welcome.
