Student Materials: Please bring the following: - comfortable eye and ear protection (the studio can also provide loaners) - long pants and closed-toe shoes to be worn in the shop - a hand tool needing restoration. If it’s a hand plane make sure it has all of the parts and the blade isn’t bent or chipped beyond repair. ESTIMATED ADDITIONAL MATERIALS FEE: $25
School Fee & Materials: Please specify if specific types are needed... Spray bottle of water for every students stones. Honing or polishing compound/stropping paste if available. If not instructor will provide. Tormek to use for sharpening Belt sander sand paper sheets 4x36 or any size close
Instructor Materials: -Rust erasers -honing paste/stropping compound -leather strop -boeshield t9 -renaissance wax Chemicals for de-rusting(evaporust and boeshield blade and bit) Renaissance wax to protect tools after cleaning Boeshield T9 to protect tools Spray paint for hand planes Plate glass and sand paper for flattening hand planes
Equipment Needs: Sharpening stones. Two diamond stones. One under 500 grit and one 1000 grit. Two water stones one around 4000 and one around 12,000. - 6” or 8” grinders. 4 of them if possible. Can be high or low speed - one Tormek or similar with leather honing wheel. Instructor can provide if necessary. If JFCCS has a few of these to share that would be ideal. Students could pair up. -honing guides that work for chisels and plane blades(veritas is preferred but whatever JCCFS has on hand will do)

Reece Watson found a craftsman no 5 jack plane in 2008 while cleaning out his grandfather's shop and restored it back to working condition. Fourteen years later, a lot of trial and error and countless tools later, Reece has a sound method of restoring these tools to their former working condition. He utilizes a hybrid approach to woodworking in his shop with a mix of power tools and hand tools. He builds custom electric guitars from scratch with a mix of epoxy and wood along with many other fine woodworking pieces. His shop is located in Toccoa, Ga.
