Student Materials: Please bring the following: -Needle nose pliers (if you are not flying) -Safety glasses for working in wire -Apron / Dress for mess -Work gloves for working in wire -Students are encouraged to bring found objects, natural vines, recycled materials to filter into their paper mobiles. The main armatures will be built with 16/24 gauge steel wire.

Description

Learn a variety of sculptural techniques to create experimental 3D forms. Use primarily paper pulp and handmade paper combined with wire armatures, natural dyes, and found objects. Learn to make sheets of paper and use paper pulp in combination with built structures to make abstract or representational forms. No prior papermaking experience required–all levels welcome.

Nicole Uzzell was raised in New Jersey and moved to NC to attend UNC-Greensboro and Winston-Salem State University. She received a MFA from Lesley University College of Art and Design in Cambridge, MA. Uzzell currently is a professor of Art at Salem College and Forsyth Technical Comm. College while teaching clay handbuilding at the Sawtooth School for Visual Art in Winston-Salem, NC. Uzzell lives and maintains an active studio practice at the base of Hanging Rock State Park in the foothills of Stokes Co., NC.
