Student Materials: Please bring the following: -Wear cotton/natural fiber clothing and closed toe shoes -Work apron -Particle dust mask to wear while sifting enamels -Covered water bottle, no food or open drinks in the studio -The folk school has all the tools needed, but students are responsible for replacement cost of broken or lost tools. You may bring your own tools labeled with your name. -Dark glasses, preferably green tinted - #0 red sable brush or similar, dickblick.com -pack of tissues, no lotion -fine black sharpie
School Fee & Materials: FOLK SCHOOL FEE: $60-80, for enamels, copper, foil, wire, misc.
Instructor Materials: maybe some copper cups wire bending jigs
Equipment Needs: Enamel, transparent and opaque 6x6" mica per student 22, 20 or 18 ga.copper- 3 inch,9-12 per student 60 mesh sifters tweezers for bending cloisonne wires 2/0 or 3/0 saw blades 2 sheets ginbari foil per student 60/200/400 abrasive pads tracing paper 8-10 feet silver cloisonne wire, .005x.040 or .010x .040, per student 350 grit sandpaper scotch brite pads 2 clean brass brushes Preval sprayers Scalex comet cleanser distilled water

Description

Create mandala patterns in cloisonné enamel using transparent and opaque colors. Compose concentric designs, traditional or contemporary, work on 3-inch copper plates using silver cloisonné wire and silver foil. You may work on jewelry-scale objects if you choose. Also, accompany your making time with reading and writing haiku poems. All levels welcome. $

Harlan Butt is Professor Emeritus at the University of North Texas where he taught jewelry making, metalworking, and enameling from 1976 to 2017. He is past President of the Enamelist Society, past President of the Society of North American Goldsmiths, a Fellow of the American Crafts Council, and a member of the Society of American Silversmiths. His work has been exhibited internationally and is represented in permanent museum collections and galleries around the world.
