Student Materials: Please bring the following: -5 yards of 100% white cotton PFD fabric *Optional-in addition to the fabric students can bring a tote bag or scarf as long as they are 100% cotton or silk (washed/prepared for dyeing) -Apron -Rubber gloves -Seam ripper -Notebook and pen
School Fee & Materials: - 2 propane tanks (have MAINTENANCE deliver) - Lots of newspapers - Butcher paper to cover tables - Styrofoam plates (not paper) - Plastic spoons - Duct tape to tape extension cords to floor for safety - Matches (or lighter/clicker) to start propane stoves - Ivory dishwashing soap
Instructor Materials: - Indigo, color dyes, cassava powder - Raffia, foam rubber, and tools to apply adire
Equipment Needs: Wet Room - 1 table per student in studio - Outside picnic table - Electric frying pans, 1 for every 2 students (6 max). Please make sure they are all WORKING. - Extension cord for each fry pan (6 max) - 2 propane stoves (outside) - 2 wax boil-out pots - Small cook pot for preparing cassava paste - Large spoons and stir rods to use with indigo, along with tongs for indigo and boiling water - 5 or 6 butter knives (to scrape cassava off dyed pieces) - Plastic buckets, lots (2-gallon size is good, need 8 or so) - Hose on outside spigot - Clothes line, inside and out, and lots of clothes pins - 7 or 8 clothes hangers - TV/DVD player

Enjoy a hands-on exploration of traditional adire eleko and tie-dyeing techniques with a native Nigerian artist as your instructor. Learn about the history and meanings behind these traditional designs within the culture of the Yoruba people. Prepare and create patterns and designs using stitch resist, casava paste, a small broom, a chicken feather, and vibrant indigo to produce beautiful cloth. All levels welcome.

Gasali Adeyemo, a Nigerian batik artist, learned his craft at the Nike Center for Arts & Culture in Osogbo. After studying there and teaching for several years, his artwork was exhibited in Germany. As a result, his artistic career began to bloom. He now teaches and exhibits in the U.S. and internationally and resides in Santa Fe, NM.
