Student Materials: Please bring the following: *Note that the Folk School and the Instructor will have a limited number of all of these available for use or to share during class, so you do not need to bring everything on the list. Contact instructor to check on availability before class if you cannot bring your own. -Spinning device you are comfortable with and 3-4 empty bobbins. This could be an eSpinner or treadle wheel in good working condition. Drop spindles are also an option, but you will need multiple spindles or may need to wind off singles for plying. -Hand cards. -Small brush for cleaning fiber from hand cards. -Spinning tools you normally use (orifice hook, oil, niddy noddy, etc.). -Lazy Kate. -Hole punch. -Precision scale that measures down to 1/100 grams. -Respirator or KN95 mask, rubber gloves, apron. -Photos, images, or fabric for color inspiration. -Knitting needles, crochet hook, or small Weave-It or Zoom type loom to make samples.
Instructor Materials: -Dyed and undyed wool fiber. -ProChemical One Shot Dyes. -Cups, plastic spoons, and wooden stirrers. -Spinning wheel, eSpinner. -Lazy Kates (2). -Niddy Noddy (2). -Ball winder. -Scales (3). -Hand cards. -Drum carder. -Wool Combs (peasant, fine, and mini). -Various sized ziplock bags for students to organize fiber. -Stick-on labels & masking tape. -Record cards.
Equipment Needs: -Hand cards, drum carders, wool combs. -Niddy noddies, ball winders, swifts. -Scales, measuring cups and spoons. -Dyeing equipment (pots, stoves, dye mixing containers, stirrers, tongs, buckets). -Newspaper or other to protect tables from dye. -Rubber gloves, respirator masks & aprons for students who may not bring them. -White vinegar, Synthrapol -Masking tape, hang tags, Sharpies -Spin driers, towels, drying racks, clotheslines, and fan. -Tables and chairs.

Learn to dye solids, using hand and drum carding and other ways to create gradient rovings. Experiment with yarn structure (plies, marling, chain plying, etc.). Understand considerations for dyeing, blending, and spinning for specific projects so you can design and spin exactly the yarn you want. Must be able to spin a single and a simple ply.

Margaret Radcliffe learned to knit as a child and has been designing handknits all her adult life. She is the author of "The Knitting Answer Book," "The Essential Guide to Color Knitting Techniques," "Circular Knitting Workshop," and "The Knowledgeable Knitter." Since 1991, Margaret has taught everything from beginning knitting to garment design, with an emphasis on helping all knitters to become independent and creative. Her current fiber interest is preparing, spinning, and designing with rare heritage breed wools. Margaret holds a BA in medieval studies and an MA in English literature, and has been an information systems auditor, computer programmer, business executive, research administrator, dancer, and editor.
