Student Materials: Please bring the following: -All tools are provided, but if you prefer, you may bring your own: -Basket Shears -Flush Snips -Secateurs -MoraKniv (or similar carving blade) -rag quality soaking towel(lap sized). *If you intend to bring your own handle, you must ensure that it is cured(not green or fresh) wood that is not harboring any insects & you must ensure that it passes the strength test by bending it over your knee or knocking it over a porch railing. School Fee & Materials: FS broom corn
Instructor Materials: Hurl, craft corn, tampico, stalks, various cord, assorted dyed fiber, cured saplings, assorted hardwood. Various treadles, brakes, stitching vices, needles, clothes pins.
Equipment Needs: *(I would prefer) *Naked treadles with access to cord. I could work around: *treadles loaded with cord on only ½ of treadle, leaving room for students to wind their own color of choice. *Cord #18 & #20, assorted colors. (folks typically prefer the non-primary colors) *palm sanders *palm sander sand paper various grit *access to shave horse x2 *draw knife x 2 *Rag quality soaking towels, lap size. *5 gallon buckets x3 *clothes pins x20 *Basket weaving tool kits with brand new utility blades *additional fresh utility blades

Beginners will gain confidence by starting with hand brooms. Experienced students will focus on projects of their choosing and more intricate techniques. Learn construction, handle processing, tools, ergonomic considerations, creative problem solving, stitching, and finishing. $

Amanda Lee Lazorchack of Please Send Word is an artist and educator in Eastern, KY. Her work explores placemaking and belonging, using the vernacular tools of domesticity as a reflection of the relationship between labor and leisure, agency & utility. She farms willow as a regenerative weaving material. She teaches and demonstrates craft internationally. Lazorchack is also the Director of Broom Craft at Berea College Student Craft.
