Schedule Type Title: Every Day of the Week
Schedule Description: Daily
Sessions: 6
Session Hours: 6.00
Program Area: Surface Design, Dyeing
Instructor: Emily Ayers
Studio/Location: Wet Room
Student Materials: Please bring the following: -Clothing that can get dye on it, comfortable shoes -Yardage and/or undyed clothing - not required and instructor will send info about this prior to the class. -Note: Additional materials may be $150-$200, but this is not always the case. It depends on whether the student brings their own yardage/clothing blanks. Your instructor will give students price lists up front.
School Fee & Materials: - Plastic for covering countertops where dye is mixed in studio. Do not cover tables with either paper or plastic. The students dye in plastic bins at the tables and plastic on the tables makes it almost impossible to stitch/fold, etc... - Old towels - Rubber gloves & safety glasses, for those who don't bring. (Instructor is bringing extra dust masks and non-laytex gloves) - Small amount of bleach for final day clean-up (last thing we do before leaving the room) - Synthapol Unfortunately, long rubber gloves won't actually work. I'm allergic to latex, and can't touch the long gloves. I don't bother with them and purple skin is pretty, right? EMILY: Dust masks, safety glasses, and long rubber gloves are required for our classes that use Procion dyes, which is why these items are on the student materials list. It is also necessary to use fans in the studio for cross-ventilation with windows open, if we dye indoors. Is it okay if I just have the overhead ventilation system on, if it's 30 degrees outside? Also, Acid dyes are worse than Procion. They are steam set in the room. Procion is only dangerous when it's still in a powdered form (unless you drink it). I do tell my students to not drink the water. :)
Instructor Materials: -Dyes (both acid and MX) and auxiliary chemicals -Yardage in a variety of fibers NOTE: Additional materials may be $150-$200, but this is not always the case. It depends on whether the student brings their own yardage/clothing blanks. I have had students surprised by their final total, but they produced a HUGE amount and I give them price lists up front. -Itajime supplies - clamps, clothes pins, popsicle sticks, rubber bands, marbles, popcorn kernels, etc.... -Arashi/Kanoko supplies - heavy cotton yarn for wrapping -Nui supplies - heavy upholstery thread, needles -Ziplock bags -Steam pot for silk dyes -Large tupperwares for soda/citric soaks -Mixing cups for dye -Squirt bottles for dye -Retayne -My reference books -Nitrile gloves -Safety pins/tags/sharpies for labeling pieces -A bunch of stuff I can't currently think of
Equipment Needs: -Arashi poles (PVC) -Plastic to cover counters where dye is mixed -Ironing boards/irons -Towels to protect ironing boards -Smaller towels to keep at student tables for cleaning up -Dishwashing bins - preferably (2) per student, (22 bins, total) -(8) plastic buckets for larger dye baths and retayne buckets (I can also bring these) -Clothes pins that can be used to hang up things that may still have dye in them
Skill Level: All Levels
Total Materials Fees: $150-$200

Emily Ayers has been a batik artist for thirty years, has exhibited on the festival circuit for fifteen years, and has taught a variety of subjects at the Folk School since 2010. She considers herself a "serial artist" with a strong affinity for textile work, including batik, and all sorts of dye work, weaving, and felting. She also works in stained glass, binds books, and creates Ukrainian Easter eggs (pysanky). Emily's formal education includes master's degrees in architecture and accounting--neither of which she uses. Art is much more fun!
