Student Materials: Please bring the following: BOOKS: - 3 to 10 in need of repair. The number you will work on and complete in class depends upon size of project and complexity of repair. ***Please do not bring mildewed or mold-damaged books, due to possible allergies of your classmates! - Cloth-covered books are recommended for starters, and a few leather books are welcome additions. - Bring a variety of books with varying types and levels of repair needs -- books with detached covers, loose texts, torn pages, and missing spines and end caps are good. We'll begin with basic repair techniques, then move on to specific repairs as needed. (Some practice books will be available from the instructor as well.) - If you have a specific book project(s) that you are bringing, let the instructor know if you will need a specific color of cloth or leather to fix it/them. TOOLS TO BRING: - A small pair of scissors with pointy tips (embroidery type) - A glue brush, 1/2" - Also bring a camera for taking some "before" photos (smart-phone photos are fine). - You may also bring your own binding tools, if you have any. (Be sure to label them with your name or initials.) Studio items include break-off knives, cutting mats, scissors, steel awls, bone folders, metal rulers, brayers, and covered bricks.

Judith Beers retired from teaching young children and now devotes her time to book arts-teaching, constructing, repairing, restoring, and preserving books-at her own bindery and with Dea Sasso at the Light of Day Bindery, both in Asheville, NC. An advocate of lifelong learning, Judith continues to experiment with marbling, papermaking, box making, and printmaking. She has been teaching at the Folk School since 2010-first as an assistant instructor, progressing to instructor in 2012, and now teaching several times per year.
