Student Materials: Please bring the following: - Safety glasses, goggles, or face shield - N95 face mask (a style that seals around the nose and mouth is best) - Apron (to protect clothes from lye and oil) - Rubber gloves (should reach past ends of shirtsleeves and allow for good dexterity) - Long-sleeve shirts, long pants, socks, and close-toed shoes (choose clothes you can get oil on) - Clippers for cutting herbs and flowers, basket or foraging bag for gathering - Warm clothes if it gets chilly to go outside for collecting, we have baskets and paper bags - Flat box for transporting soap ESTIMATED ADDITIONAL MATERIALS FEE: $125 for 10-20 pounds of soap. Students may pay more or less depending on how much they make.

Soap drying racks, OR paper grocery bags, OR cardboard trays from soda, bottled water, etc. - Extra waterproof aprons, safety glasses, masks, & gloves for students who do not bring any --Maybe Van access one morning or afternoon for Field trip
Instructor Materials: - Base ingredients for all soaps (olice oil, coconut oil, palm oil, colorants, lye) - Essential oils and natural additives (herbs, spices, clays, dried flowers, beer, honey, goats' milk, beef fat, etc.) - Soap molds - Printed booklets - Reference books --soap flat boxes
Equipment Needs: We may need vehicle if available one morning or afternoon for Field trip to Karins Herb Crib and/or Blue Moon Elise in Murphy Planned for Keith House lower level, with kitchen. Access to all Basic Soap making kitchen tools in Lower Keith House Kitchen, including microwave, stove and fridge 8 tables with brown paper cover, chairs -screen and digital access for computer - Stainless steel bowls - Immersion blender (one per student) - Milk frother (one per student) - Small mixing dishes (four per student for mixing colors - tumblers with rounded bottoms or taller dishes preferable since they'll be using them with the milk frothers) - Digital scales (6 + and batteries) - Rubber spatulas - Thermometers (meat or infrared, one per student) - Measuring spoons and cups - Hotplates and stovetops (one per student) - Funnel pitchers for pouring soap - 4 - Pitcher for each student? - Soap molds - Cutters - Crockpots (2) - Soap making books from our library stash - Large plastic bowls (4 +) -gathering baskets and clippers, -dehydrators --Maybe one morning or afternoon, trip to Murphy Blue Moon Elise Or Karen's Herb Farm

Frances Juhlin is a farmer and longtime Folk School participant with a deep love for practical, hands-on skills like soap making and cooking. She and her husband, Steve, own Candy Mountain Farm in Murphy, NC, where they grow organic vegetables and operate a CSA for the local community. Frances has assisted or studied with every soap making instructor at the Folk School over the years and brings a thoughtful, grounded approach to teaching. She has also assisted in a wide range of Folk School cooking classes—from bread and soup to Indian cuisine—and has taught courses in container and organic gardening.
