Student Materials: Please bring the following: -Black permanent marker -Small scrub brush (wire) -Scrubby metal (dishwashing style) -Sharp scissors (but not your fabric scissors) -Old towel -Apron -Dust mask, ESPECIALLY if allergic to wood dust and mold. (Optional): -Label any tools you bring with your name/initials): -Dremel tool -Drill -Woodburning tools -Mini jig-saws -Tapestry needle

Instructor Materials: 6 gourds per student (extra for purchase) - Stains and acrylic paints - Basic tools for student use (saws, wood burning, Dremels, power carvers) - Stencils, patterns, pictures and stamps - Yarns and cords, basketry reed - Found objects and junk, beads - Leather strings and scraps - Cleaning tools

Gourds aren't just for birdhouses! Create functional items such as bowls, trays, and vessels, along with jewelry, instruments, decorative masks, and sculptures. Employ woodburning, carving, filigree, weaving, and basketry techniques to create designs and enhance rims. Add an element of color while maintaining the gourd's natural beauty by using inks, dyes, stains, waxes, and paint. All levels welcome. $

Fonda Haddad has been a fiber artist for more than twenty-five years. She holds a master's degree in visual arts education and has taught kindergarten through college. Gourd crafting grew out of her love for basketry. She currently creates and sells one-of-a-kind work in both media. Fonda teaches fiber arts in Florida at state and professional levels. She is a member of the American Gourd Society and its chapters in Florida, the National Basketry Organization, and the Florida Tropical Weavers Guild.
