Student Materials: Please bring the following: - 3 to 5 stretched canvases at least 10 x 12" (rectangle or square) - Sewing, beading (Dritz short are recommended), and embroidery needles (variety) - Quilting thread & button/craft thread (also called upholstery-weight)...variety. Beading thread like Nymo is helpful! - Embroidery floss (variety) - Variety of Golden Fluid Acrylics. The instructor suggests purchasing the "Watermedia Set," or buy a selection of 4 oz. bottles in your preferred palette. - Acrylic medium (gloss, matte or gel...whatever your preference); 1 pint recommended. - Palette and water containers - Paper towels - Photocopies of photos, magazines, catalogs, and/or books (new or vintage) (use a photocopier or laser printer, like a large office style one - inkjet personal printers don't work well) - Clear packing tape - Variety of paintbrushes -- acrylic-appropriate. - Variety of beads, buttons, sequins, costume jewelry, embellishments - Scissors (large-handled) and Fiskars Micro-tip recommended - Variety of colored pencils (Prisma color is recommended) - Thimble - Fat quarters of fabric (enough to at least cover your canvases. -Thimble (optional)
School Fee & Materials: 1 6ft table per student. 3 6ft tables for common work space. 5 6ft tables for instructor use (supplies, etc). Everything currently in the painting studio :)
Instructor Materials: Supplies for purchase, such as extra embellishments, needles, thread, etc.
Equipment Needs: 'PROGRAM OPS -- If class is full, this will require 15 tables... (or see above re table needs) WET WORK AREA: - One 6' table per student, near water source. This is where they will paint, etc. 1 6ft table per student. 3 6ft tables for common work space. 5 6ft tables for instructor use (supplies, etc). Everything currently in the painting studio :)

Description

Discover a new twist (or stitch!) for mixed-media collage. Gain an introduction to basic collage techniques–combining paper and found materials with drawing and painting–then add elements of stitching and embellishment. Explore abstract and narrative compositions while learning to mix materials in surprising ways. Previous hand-sewing experience is a plus. Hand and finger strength is important, and good eyesight or magnification is needed.

Jennifer Reis is a textile artist who creates intensively hand-worked, ornately beaded, and embellished paper doll icons on cloth using traditional and alternative materials. She has received numerous awards and prizes, including Kentucky’s Al Smith Fellowship, national adjudicated and invitational exhibitions, and teaching opportunities at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, John C. Campbell Folk School, Craft Alliance Center of Art + Design, Cleveland Institute of Art, Society of Contemporary Craft, and the Southwest School of Art.
