Student Materials: Please bring the following: -Needle nose pliers - heavy duty (not jewelry weight) (if you have a second pair with a similar jaw, bring that also.) - Embellishments to be wired on (can be recycled glass, metal parts, beads, small stones or ???) The important criteria is that they make you happy and are no larger than 3" each. NOTE: We will be fabricating embellishments, so if you don't have anything to bring, no worries! -Work gloves, light duty, canvas or leather -Fine point sharpie -Blue painter's tape -If you need magnification assistance, a magnifying device, such as an OptiVISOR or reading glasses, may be helpful for detail work. -Safety glasses. (If you wear glasses, try 3M Eyeglass Protectors, #47030, that fit comfortably over glasses -- available at building-supply stores.) -It is recommended to use a particle dust mask (3M #8233 or rated equivalent) when using a polisher and grinder in the Jewelry studio. The mask can be purchased from Rio Grande, item #201-654 (1-800-545-6566 or www.riogrande.com These can also be found at your local hardware store. -Ear plugs are available in the craft shop for a small fee should you need them. -Notebook and pen -Something to tie your hair back with, if applicable -Apron or old clothes, recommended -Non-flammable clothing and close-toed shoes, recommended NOTE: The fluctuating cost of metals used in this class may result in changes to the estimated materials fees at the time the class is run.
School Fee & Materials: - Fuel/propane - Paper Towels
Instructor Materials: copper sheet, additional wire and tubing, and a small assortment of recycled 'whimsy' items.
Equipment Needs: Jewelry Studio - Torches, student tool kits, soldering supplies, saws, and other basic metalworking equipment. - Inventory available upon request by contacting Resident Artist Barbara Joiner at [email protected] - Large screen TV monitor with internet access for projecting demonstrations

Create whimsical and elegant sculptures that hang in your garden using copper tubing, sheet, wire, and found objects. Scale up basic jewelry-making techniques like coiling, sawing, soldering, and cold connections to create rain chains, tree dangles, and mobiles. Add extra whimsy and personality to your hangings by incorporating upcycled glass or metal “charms” into the links. All levels welcome, but good hand strength is a must. $
