Student Materials: Please bring the following: - cotton clothing only, and closed-toe shoes - no sandals - a work apron is suggested - particle dust mask to wear while sifting enamels - covered water bottle, no food or open drinks in the studio - some enamels may contain small amounts of hazardous materials. It is recommended to use a particle dust mask (3M #8233 or rated equivalent). The mask can be purchased from Rio Grande, item #201-654 (1-800-545-6566 or www.riogrande.com). You may also find them at your local hardware store. - the Folk School has all the tools needed, but students are responsible for replacement cost of any broken or lost tools. Any classes requiring etchants or fuels, such as MAPP gas or acetylene, will be charged a fee for the amount used.
School Fee & Materials: FOLK SCHOOL FEE: $30 for enamels & copper. (Varies by how many pieces a student makes, and averages $10-$30 for jewelry-size pieces; $30-$60 if home-decor and larger forms are made.) Description

Learn to make your own pendants, earrings, and dog tags using recycled copper, then add beautiful colors with vitreous enamels. Beginners will get a step-by-step introduction to the process of fusing powdered glass to the copper base; more advanced students can experiment with various enameling techniques, such as sgraffito, stenciling, and using liquid enamels. All levels welcome in this fun and approachable class.

June Caldwell studied art at the University of South Alabama and has studied enameling with a variety of instructors. She has been teaching at her private studio in Chattanooga, TN, and at the Folk School for fifteen years. Her exhibits and awards include a one-woman show at the Memphis Botanic Garden (Memphis, TN); the Cosmic Trunk Show at the National Ornamental Metal Museum (Memphis, TN); Southeastern Blacksmith Conference (Madison, GA); Best of Show Award at the Tallahatchie Riverfest (New Albany, MS), and the Art of Healing exhibit, Itawamba Community College (Fulton, MS).
