Get swept up in a week of 18th-century broom making. Starting with sorting and sizing sorghum tassels; learning all about broomcorn, students then whittle and finish rough sticks into fine broom handles. Finally, learn hand-plaiting techniques to make a wide variety of whisk and sweeper brooms. Functional and fanciful, these creations make great gifts. Students will each make multiple brooms and leave with the know-how to continue making more on their own. All levels welcome; some upper body and

Mark Hendry is a full-time instructor and artisan of historic handcraft, specializing in brooms and basketry, with a focus on using natural materials. With over 40 years of experience as a professional teacher of fine and performing arts in private, public, and magnet schools, Mark travels across the country, teaching all levels of students from age 3 to 93. He is currently director and resident artist for Mountain Heritage Handcraft in Blue Ridge, Georgia.
