Get a thorough overview of basic forging techniques–tapers, upsets, half-on/half-off blows, and slitting and drifting–as well as fire building and management. Work on hooks, brackets, and simple tooling. Expect to gain comfort in your forging ability, particularly with multiple-piece projects. Beginners welcome.

Blacksmiths have an elegantly simple solution for every problem–hit it with a hammer! And, every time we hit it, the metal moves in three dimensions. Learn to think of hot steel as a mass-like clay to squish instead of as a line to bend. Learn to track changes in order to make controllable and repeatable forgings of your own design. Expect to focus on skill building rather than finished pieces. All levels welcome.

Make a variety of items found in and around the home in this fun, informative class. Based on your skill level, create cooking utensils, candlesticks, coat racks, plant hangers, fireplace tools, and more. Bring your own design ideas or use those provided by the instructor. Basic forging skills will be covered as well as more advanced techniques, including mortise and tenon, riveting, and forge welding. Beginners will build a good foundation while more advanced students will expand their skills.

Every project requires tools. Tools are even needed to make tools! Cover the basics of tool making and heat treating while crafting hammers, tongs, chisels, and more. Discuss how these pieces can be altered and tweaked to enhance your individual experience. Feel the satisfaction and reward of using your own forged tools and customize your work to fit your needs. Experience the magic of fire and metal! In this introductory class, come learn fire maintenance, hammer control, and the basic techniques for moving metal. Use these fundamentals to craft your own hook, bottle opener, and keychain. Students may pursue additional projects as time allows. If you have ever wanted to try your hand at blacksmithing, this is the perfect class for you.

Come enjoy heating and beating metal! Start with the basics–fire management, hammer control, and fundamental forging skills–by making hooks and other household items. Students can undertake more advanced projects suited to their experience and interests. Bring project ideas or be inspired by functional and sculptural concepts presented in class. Beginning and intermediate levels welcome.

2-Week Class. Following the tradition of Francis Whitaker, you will have the opportunity to focus on fine ornamental iron work for a personal, predesigned project. In addition to working on individual projects, share and learn from the techniques used in your fellow classmate’s work. Students must be able to perform a dropped-tongs forge weld, make upset square corners, and freehand scrolls. Predesigned projects must be submitted to your instructor before class begins. $

Take your first steps towards the forge! First, learn how to maintain a coal fire and practice points discipline for hammering. Then, achieve good, clean hammer control and progress to tool making. Forge, harden, and temper your own punches, chisels, and tongs while learning about steel. Watch your skills develop as you use tools you have made to create keychains, nails, bottle openers, and hooks. All levels welcome; be prepared for an active class. $

Gain an understanding of the principles involved in figure and face carving in steel and apply them to your own work. Make six to eight hand tools to use throughout the process for carving and shaping several finished faces/heads including–but not limited to–wizards, bald heads, mules, dragons, skulls, etc. Intermediate to advanced levels welcome.

Forge and fabricate hollow-form critters from mild steel. Bears, bugs, squirrels, birds, or fish–if it walks, flies, swims, or slithers you can create it in a realistic or expressive style. Enthusiastic students of any level who are comfortable working with their hands and willing to work hard are invited to join us for this fun and challenging class.

Travel back in time to Europe's Iron Age as you learn to forge everyday utensils from the Celtic era. Begin with penannular brooches to cover many techniques–squaring, drawing out, twisting, scrolling, etc.–while you get acclimated to your forge. Continue to reimagine these historic processes as you forge belt buckles, forks, knives, and more, reviewing proper hammer technique and learning tips and tricks along the way. All levels welcome.

Combining blacksmithing and jewelry-making, this course offers an opportunity for beginning and advanced students, of any interest, to develop their skills as they forge and craft a Damascus ring with a silver liner. Begin by forging a piece of Damascus steel–a particularly beautiful and ornamental steel filled with folds and distinctive patterns–then shape that steel into a ring blank to be lined with silver. All levels welcome. $

Bring natural forms to your ironwork. Forge vines, leaves, flowers, grapes, and more for use in practical and decorative projects. Challenge yourself to make your iron more lifelike using form and texture techniques. This class is designed for intermediate blacksmiths; however, more basic beginner-appropriate designs will also be available.

Create a sculpture that comes to life as you add layer upon layer of steel. A variety of techniques will be demonstrated and used to fabricate this fantastic fowl, including blacksmithing, welding, and cutting. This hefty rooster will leave you crowing! All skill levels welcome; perfect for hardworking folks with a sense of humor who want to get a start in metalworking. $

Experience the journey of learning blacksmithing basics. Discover how to build and manage a coal fire and how to use that heat to create several useful and decorative items, all while practicing seven of the basic blacksmithing processes. Forge a fully functional axe, complete with handle, during this action-packed week. Learn the foundational blacksmithing skills necessary for creating a variety of axe styles–from the Viking era to early American tomahawks and axes–including design, hammer control, forge welding, heat treating, and more. Leave the week a sharper smith with an awesome axe. All levels welcome.

Explore small or large projects with traditional techniques including welds, square corners, pass throughs, tenons, collars, wraps, rivets, rings, tapered rings, and more. Learn design principles as well as use of power hammers and tools. Limited to experienced blacksmiths with forge welding experience. Students may contact the instructor prior to class to discuss project goals.

Build a knife by applying only forging techniques and construction processes used by smiths of old. Emphasize using hammer skills to move and shape hot metal as well as shaping and surfacing with files. Also, learn about hardening and tempering by heat, color, and eye using hand tools to construct and rivet wooden handles. Then, finish using a time-tested hand technique to sharpen your blade to a razors edge. $
