Join this introduction to the basics of letterpress and folded books. Begin the week with a collaborative printshop process where you will explore typesetting, composition, press setup, and operation. For the second half of the week, enjoy a print swap and individually manipulate a print–or two–to create a folded accordion or concertina book. Return home with a limited edition of community produced broadsides, at least two artists’ books, and good memories of a productive week!

The Carolingian hand is an early medieval book hand that is easy to read, has generous line spacing because of its long ascenders and descenders, and is easy on the eye. Many of our modern type faces are based on Carolingian script. Explore the rhythm and spacing of this alphabet and discover families of letters. Near the end of the week, make a book to record your studies. All levels welcome.

Learn four techniques for creating your own book covers–book cloth, paste paper, Suminagashi marbled paper, and cyanotype paper. Also, make four different book structures to complement your covers, including a soft cover book with removable signatures, a Japanese stab book, a twin needle Coptic book, and a limp binding. Intermediate levels welcome; some experience with book binding is suggested.

Dive into the mesmerizing world of marbling! In this hands-on class, learn classic patterns using combs and tools, then experiment with marbling on paper, fabric, and 3D objects. Also, explore simple craft ideas and creative ways to turn your marbled pieces into gifts or everyday art. Whether you're new to marbling or looking to deepen your practice, expect plenty of time for experimentation and play. All levels welcome. $

Learn to reattach broken covers, clean and repair pages, remove stains, bring leather back to life, and use cosmetic tricks of the trade and archival products to create miracles. Conservation sew a broken book, sew single sheets to convert a paperback to a traditional hardcover, and more. You can also make a book from “scratch” and are encouraged to bring damaged books from your own library. The instructor will contact students in advance about special interests. All levels welcome.

Use toner-based images printed on standard copy paper to create Lithographs; aka “paper plate lithography.” Use markers and other permanent black drawing materials to create images. Then, convert these images into paper matrixes with a laser jet printer which you will process and print on an etching press. Also, explore drawing on Pronto plates and printing directly from the drawings. Once the lithographs are printed, use these prints to make accordion-style books. All levels welcome.

Come learn at least three different alphabets using both flat and pointed brushes with water-based pigments. Work on both larger and smaller scales allowing you to become acquainted with the range of possibilities for lettering. Also, experiment with working with layers of letters and incorporating collage elements. Your work may become freestanding broadsides or used to make a simple book using pages you create during class. All levels welcome.

Dos-à-dos–French for "back-to-back"–is a binding structure in which two separate books are bound together sharing the same back cover. Come make your own raised cord, 5 ½ by 6-inch, dos-à-dos binding with covers and papers of each book as totally different from each other, or exactly the same. Choose from various papers and if you want to sew more signatures (adding more pages), more materials can be provided.
