Description

Experience the satisfaction of repairing your own rustic chair by learning to weave a new seat using a “three over, three under” herringbone twill pattern. This technique can be used with any chair that has four round rails that form the seat. Use flat reed or wide binder cane as you weave your chair seat back to life. All levels welcome; contact the instructor three weeks prior to class to discuss projects. Some stamina required for periods of standing as well as hand dexterity and strength.

Use spilt turning as the foundation for a foot stool and taper legs for a table stool frame. Have a Shaker tape demonstration and get started with seat weaving. Description

Explore the process of hand crafting an Appalachian rocking chair in small, manageable steps. Spend time refining pre-milled chair parts such as shaping the curved rear legs and slats, mortising for slats and rungs, shaping the arms and runners, assembly, and installing and balancing the runners. Finally, choose between hickory bark, Shaker tape, or Danish Cord to weave a beautiful seat for your new chair. Intermediate levels welcome.

Reclaim old chairs, rockers, and footstools whose backs and bottoms have seen better days. Learn techniques used by generations of craftspeople to transform family heirlooms and flea market finds into useful treasures. Work with common seat materials including binder cane, French cane, fiber rush, flat reed, and pressed cane, depending on the chair(s). Bring one or two projects–structurally sound and surface finished–to work on in a supportive, mindful environment. All levels welcome.

Using traditional Shaker tape and repurposed chairs, create unique handwoven seats based on patterns such as houndstooth, canvas weave, and twill. Explore weave patterns more deeply by by first creating several weavings with paper, then translating those patterns into handwoven seats. Leave the week with a new understanding of weave structure and a selection of beautiful and functional chairs for your home.
