Student Materials: Please bring the following: TOOLS -Pencils in various hardnesses. You will need the following: 2H, HB 2B and perhaps 4B. -(Optional): look for graphite sticks or woodless pencils, which are solid pencil lead. These come in a few hardnesses, such as 2B, 6B and 9B. -Erasers, such as a kneaded eraser, Magic Rub or Pink Pearl. -Fine point black pens such as a roller ball; like Pentel Precise, V7 or V5, available at office supply stores. Pentel Microns are also popular, and have waterproof ink. -Water brush, such as made by Pentel, Zig or Niji . -(Optional): Pointed brush or brush pen, such as Pentel Color Brush, with black ink. Small watercolor palette is optional, or water soluble colored pencils. A few soft watercolor brushes, sizes 2 or 4, flat or round PAPER -Drawing paper pad, 11x17” or larger. Brands include Canson, Strathmore, Hammermill and the like. Notebook or sketchbook—a comfortable size for toting (during and after workshop) My faves are about 5x7.” -(Optional): One sheet of colored paper, such as Canson or Strathmore (for a cover for our work) -Pad of tracing paper, 9x12” or larger. OTHER STUFF -Drawing board and easel if you use one, ruler, T-square & triangle OR rolling ruler. There are drawing boards in the studio. -Craft knife and or scissors, glue stick (such as Uhu). -Please bring some intriguing still life objects, such as a commercial OBJECT, packaging or some such, with some intriguing letter incorporated into its graphic design. Examples might include an old spice can, a fancy bar of soap or a soup can. Other small still life objects are welcome as well, and might include collectable objects, natural things such as plants or rocks or whatever intrigues you, both for how it looks and what it means to you. -Cardboard box about the size to hold your still life objects to set up for drawing -Depending on the weather, we may be drawing outside. Bring a sunhat and sunscreen, a portable chair if this appeals to you, and be sure drawing board is portable

Student Materials: Please bring the following: -The Folk School has drawing boards and basic drawing sets (no pens) available for your use. -All materials will be provided , there will be a materials fee, please bring a sketchbook if you use one and if you like your favorite drawing tools and some photo samples of your drawings

Instructor Materials: all drawing tools and papers included; graphite in more than one form, inks cont'e, chalks, charcoal. pens, brushes and other drawing tools. Papers with different surfaces: Bristol ( smooth/ vellum) stone henge , handmade papers, charcoal, pastel papers, gessoed papers and boards.

Description

Enjoy an introduction to drawing focused on the study of plants and possibly the creatures they support. Use classic tools–graphite, ink, conté, and charcoal–to learn several essential drawing approaches and techniques including abstracting forms, gesture, contour, and rendering value. Practice capturing what you see outdoors, as well as working from photo references in the studio. All levels welcome.
