Equipment Needs: Lower Keith And access to Open house is mandatory so they can work outside and have good ventilation for glues and a place that allows for the smoke preparing the river cane. It was a problem scheduling this class in March when it was cold and the glue smells bothered the office so we moved the class to Sunshine Jim garden bldg. We need to borrow the wood burning tools from woodworking again.

Come for stories while learning to make two old-style, Native American flutes–one made from scratch with rivercane, the other of poplar. Embellish these flutes by woodburning, coloring, and inlaying stone while listening to storytelling. Learn the story of the how the Native American flute came to the People and learn to tell the story of your flute. Enjoy experiencing working with cane and finishing with song. $

Description

Come sing traditional songs, play instruments, jam, and try a few dance steps and games. Explore cultural history and archives, as well as go on short field trips. Instruments available to borrow include mountain dulcimer, banjo, mandolin, guitar, washtub bass, autoharp, fiddle, limberjacks, and more. Students are invited to set their own agenda and goals while also enjoying lots of group time. Part of the magic of this class is group chemistry and many joyful surprises! All levels welcome.
