Program Area: Photography
Instructor: Charles Gattis
Studio/Location: Harvest Room
Student Materials: Please bring the following: -Students will need to have an iPhone or comparable smartphone that takes pictures. iPhones are preferred as the instructor will not have used any other. More recent iPhones are also preferred due to the innovations made over the past several years. A very recent iPhone will provide a much better experience for the student. -A laptop computer or iPad would also be helpful to the students as we will cover editing images in the class. We will edit in both Snapseed and Adobe Lightroom Mobile. Snapseed is a free app and Lightroom does have a 30 day trial period if the student wants to try it out. Of course, students can edit on their iPhones, but it is much easier on a larger screen. (See other information on computers below. A flash drive or portable drive may also be appreciated by the students if they don't have any other way of storing images that are edited off line. - Comfortable clothing, shoes, hat, and outdoor gear to suit the season (including rain gear). Also bring anything else you need for field trips (medicine, sunscreen, insect repellent, water bottle, etc.) For all digital classes: You are encouraged to bring your own laptop. (If you do, please have general knowledge on how to use it; we do not provide computer training.) You'll need tools to transfer your images from camera to computer; a memory card reader or a flash drive is recommended. The studio is equipped with 4 rather new Macs with the updated, full version of Photoshop for shared student use -- but this is not enough for a full class, so please bring your laptop if possible. If you use a school computer, you must bring a flash drive to save your work.
School Fee & Materials: Having Lightroom on the four computers would also be helpful as we will be editing with that and there is a version for the Macintosh that comes free with the adobe photography contract. I do also plan to bring my MacBook Pro to use with PowerPoint and Apple TV. That will make all the computers in the room available for students who don't bring a laptop.
Instructor Materials: Instructor will provide copies of the PowerPoint presentation following each class
Equipment Needs: Printer, paper, ink, foam board, glue

Be sure to bring images you’d like to work on in the studio- either printed or in digital form (I think that we’ll average completing between 1-4 pieces a day depending on complexity and size, however bring more images to choose from). -PAINTS: Artist-quality paint in tubes will be used in the class. Recommended companies include Daniel Smith, Winsor & Newton, M. Graham, Cheap Joe’s American Journey, Holbein, and Grumbacher who offer artist-quality paint. Please avoid lesser-quality paints such as Winsor-Newton’s “Cotman”, Hobby Lobby “Master’s Touch”, Michael’s “Artist’s Loft”, Grumbacher’s “Academy” or anything labeled “student” or “classroom”-grade. -Students come equipped with all of the colors listed below: Cool colors: 1. Quinacridone Rose* 2. Hansa Yellow Light* 3. Phthalo Blue* Warm colors: 4. Pyrrol Scarlet* 5. New Gamboge* 6. French Ultramarine* 7. Burnt Sienna § PALETTE: I personally like Tom Lynch’s plastic palettes and would recommend it or something very similar as we’ll need a rather large central well to mix a variety of color combinations. In addition to this palette, feel free to bring any other palettes (loaded or not) you care to use. NOTE: I’d strongly recommend (if you can) to also fill the outer wells with about a third to a half of a tube of paint with warms located on one side and cools on the other about a week in advance so that the paint is nice and dry. If you forget to do this, don’t sweat- we’ll make things work, just don’t do this too late or the wet paint inevitably will drip out into your luggage while you travel- ugh! BRUSHES: -Suggestions are artist-quality watercolor brushes that will hold a point, not shed, and that have excellent water-holding capacity will produce the best work. I use Winsor & Newton artist grade tube watercolors. - Artist grade watercolor paper - In fact, you can get by for the entire week with just two 400 Series/Best Strathmore Watercolor spiral-bound pads, 9" x 12", 12 sheets to the pad, but you may already have paper you wish to use. - Brushes - I often use Winsor & Newton's University series brushes, primarily a #4 round for painting and a #2 bright for lifting, but you may bring ANY you wish. - Watercolor plastic palette with 10 holes or more or a travel palette (more convenient as it closes) - A pad for taking notes - Spray bottle for water - Kneaded eraser and pencils - Water container - a few rags (Optional, but potentially very useful for this class) - Ebony pencil - Watercolor painting and drawing supplies you already have. Some of my favorite colors, besides indigo, burnt sienna, and yellow ochre, are quinacridone (sometimes called permanent) rose, winsor blue (red shade), pyrrol red, winsor violet, and winsor yellow. - Drafting tape - A watercolor journal - spiral-bound good quality watercolor paper such as the Strathmore watercolor pad mentioned above. High quality paper and paint can make a crucial difference in what is possible in watercolor. I recommend the following: - In paper, brands such as Lanaquarelle, Strathmore, Arches, Sennelier, and Fabriano artist grade paper. - In watercolor paints (tube paints only), artist (professional) grade Winsor & Newton or Daniel Smith brand. - PLEASE: Avoid student grade paper or paint such as Winsor & Newton's Cotman brand or Grumbacher"s Academy brand, as they do not perform well. Look closely at your watercolor tubes for the telltale Cotman or Academy label.
