Description

Crankies are illustrated scrolls in boxes with attached handles that are "hand cranked" to create a moving panorama, inviting the viewer to experience the images like watching a movie. These historic storytelling devices were traditionally used to illustrate ballads sung by traveling musicians as they performed through the Appalachian mountains. Carve blocks to print smaller "personal" crankies as well as collaborate on a single long scroll to create a shared experience.

We have a lot of process to get through, it’s best to come with ideas. -Sketchbook/notebook, pencil and pen - try to bring what you have, no need to buy, sketching on printer paper is just fine. -2 Copper plates- 0.05” thickness, max size 5 x 7 inches- this thickness is the most commonly available, and it’s important we’re all using the same thickness. Do not get zinc. Sources- Takach, Dick Blick, Amazon (K&S brand). Cutting plates at the Folk School is possible if you want a square. -2-4 sheets of printmaking paper - 22 x 30 inches (standard printmaking paper size) best not to roll paper- BFK Rives, Stonehenge (most economical, nice tones), Hahnemule. No watercolor paper. Get 2-3 white, and 1-2 toned, choose warm/cream or cool/grey depending on your idea. I will have some available to buy/trade. If you are flying and want to buy all your paper from me, let me know. -Cardboard portfolio - to bring home prints, homemade is fine, max paper size for prints is 11 x 15 inches, make your portfolio a little bigger.
