Student Materials: Please bring the following: - A couple of close-up photos of a pet -- yours, someone else's, or any animal of interest -- to use for inspiration. High-contrast images are best (i.e., a picture with light lights and dark darks). If you bring digital images (preferred), these can be manipulated for contrast. If you bring printed images, they should be at least 8" x 10". It is helpful for you to contact the instructor prior to class to discuss this -- see contact information at the top of your invoice/confirmation. - Design Ideas - Glass, tile, broken china, etc. -- hard objects to use as mosaic pieces. The instructor will have lots of materials available, but if you need/want specific colors to match your pet, please bring your own. - Small, hard objects to personalize the piece -- such as an engraved tag from a pet collar (optional). Another option is to add small, hard, found objects such as shells or rocks. - Eye protection and dust mask for use while cutting tile - Wear closed-toe shoes, as we will be working with glass pieces. - Work apron, smock, or clothes that can get dirty (Optional but helpful): - dust mask - rubber gloves - wheeled tile nippers (around $20 at hardware stores) or instructor will have tools to borrow - tweezers for craft - drawing paper - pencil ESTIMATED ADDITIONAL MATERIALS FEE: $150-175, depending on what you use/make. This includes a wooden base for the mosaic, mosaic pieces, glue, grout, provided by the instructor, along with glass-cutting tools to borrow.

Use handbuilding techniques, with an emphasis on hollow-building with coils, to create head-and-shoulders sculptures that embody unique narratives. Focus on overcoming artistic barriers and navigating through creative sticking points, empowering you to deepen your practice. These finished pieces will be roughly life-size or slightly smaller (but not bigger!). Process only, no firing; expect to carry home greenware.

Description

Expand your ability to sculpt! Focus on creating animal sculptures using techniques for hollowing solid forms as well as coil and slab building. Begin with creating a small, moquette sculpture, then build larger scale animals up to 18 inches tall. Learn how to give your animals expressive details with an emphasis on posture, facial features, and carving texture. Expect to end the workshop with at least two completed, unfired sculptures and guidance about glazing and firing afterwards.

In this beginner handbuilding and sculpture workshop, make spooky vessels like monster mugs, beastly bowls, and creepy-crawly cups. Learn slab, pinch, and coil techniques to build forms, then bring them to life with sculpted details like tentacles, fangs, horns, and bugs. Expect lots of texture, imagination, and Halloween-inspired weirdness. No prior clay experience required, just a love of creatures, creativity, and all things a little creepy.
