School Materials: Organically grown herbs and flowers in gardens for harvest, garden planting space, work space for seed starting and transplanting (Lower Keith), wheelbarrow, herb plants for campus garden to plant, campus map of unsprayed safe forage areas, garden tools, baskets, dehydrators, lines to hang herbs, Lower Keith kitchen cooking equipment basics
Instructor Materials: seeds, plants, soil, containers, food supplies for cooking and preserving, honey, sugar, salt, vinegars, jars, dried herbs, spices, and flowers, paper bags, labels, seed packet blanks, markers, another dehydrator, extra equipment as needed from home
Equipment Needs: Garden tools (inside shed on rock porch off Keith Lower kitchen) especially good pruners and baskets, - Gardens full of edible flowers and herbs, - areas on campus mapped to be unsprayed with chemicals. - Area we can plant for the summer/fall garden - Garden cart - Cooler of water, with cups - Tables - TV ready to hook up to lap tap for slide shows -Lower Keith kitchen studio outfitted with tables, chopping surfaces, sharp knives, dishwater, cutlery, pots, stove, sinks, paper towels, dehydrators, mortar and pestles, blenders, rice presses, collection of strainers, Tea presses, big and small bowls, stainless steel pots and glass/enamel, stainless steel containers, wax, plastic, and brown bags, compost bucket, and wooden spoons. Description

Embark on a week of sweet-scented discoveries. Using the Folk School’s expansive organic garden as our playground, learn to grow and harvest edible flowers and culinary herbs. Make fresh herbal condiments and spice blends, preserve blossoms and leaves, and prepare dishes featuring edible flowers. Be inspired by slide shows, garden walks, hands-on techniques, and a lovely tea party finale. Some stamina is required for long walks, gardening, and time in the kitchen.
