I can also possibly bring extra dance shoes if students contact me ahead of time with shoe size. I will provide resources on traditional folk music and dance for further study/exploration as well as sheet music/tab for songs we cover.

Description

Get ready for a week of Appalachian wonders! Learn freestyle flatfoot clogging and play-party dances, sing traditional songs, and play instruments—all to explore the cultural history and heritage of Appalachia. Instrument instruction will include mountain dulcimer, banjo, guitar, mandolin, limberjack, and more. Tap into two ways to keep rhythm in the Irish tradition: with a drum and with your feet. Gain an introduction to playing the bodhrán, including basic techniques, positioning, strokes, and rhythms. Student Materials: Dear Winter Dance Week Registrant, We look forward to having you join our community for the holidays. Please note that the week starts with registration from 3:00-5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 26, and ends after breakfast on Monday, January 1. Remember to bring: comfortable walking shoes and dancing shoes; a water bottle or cup; musical instruments; songs, tunes, and stories to share; rain/snow gear (so you won't need it!); a flashlight; and an alarm clock. We provide sheets, blankets, pillows, and towels. After the Saturday night dance (Dec. 30), we will have our annual "Follies" -- acts, stunts, skits, songs, and whatever. Think about this, and bring props from home, if needed. New Year's Eve (Saturday night) is a special dress-up party. We define "dress up" very broadly -- bring whatever festive duds you'll feel comfortable dancing in and enjoy wearing. Please be sure to fill out the Health/Emergency Information Sheet enclosed with your confirmation and return it to the office promptly. This will also let our kitchen staff know in advance if you have any special dietary requests. If you are flying to Atlanta and need the Folk School shuttle from the airport, be sure to arrive before 1:30 p.m. on December 26 (shuttle picks up at 2 p.m.) Make shuttle reservations IN ADVANCE by calling our office at 1-800-365-5724. There is a charge for this service. (Alternatively, you may wish to rent a car.) Your return flight on Jan. 1 must be after 5 p.m. We'll see you December 26th!

Description

This workshop for beginning to intermediate callers offers a supportive environment designed to help students discover their strengths and explore new ideas. Topics will include teaching techniques, recognizing good choreography, planning a program, leading effective walk-throughs, improving performance presence and vocal skills, and working with musicians. Gain direct experience as you practice calling and teaching actual dances, followed by encouraging feedback from fellow dancers and callers.
