Student Materials: Please bring the following: - Safety glasses, goggles, or face shield - Apron (to protect clothes from lye and oil) - Rubber gloves (should reach past ends of shirtsleeves and allow for good dexterity) - Long-sleeve shirts, long pants, socks, and close-toed shoes (choose clothes you can get oil on) ESTIMATED ADDITIONAL MATERIALS FEE: $75-$180 for 10-20 pounds of soap. Students may pay more or less depending on how much they make, priced at $8 per pound.
School Materials: - Dish soap - Sponges - Paper towels - Masking tape - Wax paper
Instructor Materials: - Base ingredients for all soaps - Essential oils and natural additives (herbs, spices, oats, dried flowers, etc.) - Soap molds - Printed and bound handbook
Equipment Needs: Lower Keith - Stainless steel bowls (preferably a large, medium, and small for each student) - Working immersion blender for each student - Digital scales (large enough to hold pot or bowl with display still visible) - Spatulas/rubber scrapers - Safety glasses/goggles - Face masks (for use while mixing lye) - Measuring spoons and cups - Infrared thermometers - Working hotplates/stovetop - Funnel pitchers for pouring soap - White board & markers - Permanent markers - Scissors - Extra rubber gloves, aprons - Tea kettle - Large pieces of cardboard for curing - 2-3 long extension cords - Extra soap molds - Soap cutters

Student Materials: Estimated materials fee: $65-$80 SAFETY GEAR: - rubber gloves that extend up your forearm - Safety goggles (not glasses) or a face shield ( protection above eyes and to the sides is needed). - Long-sleeved shirts and full-length jeans/pants to wear in class (NO capris, shorts, etc.) - Closed-toe shoes (NO sandals) PLEASE ALSO BRING: - Highly recommended: The Soapmaker's Companion by Susan Cavitch. Reading before class is strongly suggested, especially for beginners. - Hand-held calculator - Notebook/journal and pen If just getting with soap, the following are recommended, but you do not need to bring to class. We will have these items in the studio. - Quick-read thermometer -- 6-7 inch stem, round or oval dial, reading over 212 degrees F Available in the kitchen section (not an oven or candy thermometer). Avoid digital models as they tend to break easily. - Gallon-size pitcher (plastic is fine) Most students make around 8-12 lbs. of soap with batches in the 2-4 lb. range.
School Materials: Paper towels (at least 10 rolls) - Paper to cover the tables - Studio Ops to bring ice from Dining Hall daily
Instructor Materials: Soap oils and butters - Sodium hydroxide (lye) - Fragrances/essential oils - Clays - Abrasives (poppy seed, grits, walnut shells etc) - Colorants - Botanicals - Molds (for demonstration) - Cutters (for demonstration)
Equipment Needs: Per student - Crockpot - Single burner (hot plate) - Pots - stainless-steel only. 1- and 2-quart with s steel inserts (mixing bowls that sit atop) to create double boilers. - Stick blenders For the group - Digital instant-read thermometers (3-4 are needed) - 4-6 digital scales with platform, ideally 5- to 6-lb capacity. Must be able to tare. - Large ice chest (30-50 quart) to control soap temps and cool lye solutions. - Gallon-size pitchers, - sturdy spatulas - large spoons (not wooden) - batteries for equip (9v, AA, AAA) Communications Ask housekeeping for a trash pickup mid-week. Make sure there are enough floor mats to cover the floor. Oils and liquids are sometimes spilled and the mats prevent slips and falls. Budget Check spoons and spatulas for wear and tear – may need replacements Check scales and thermometers – may need to replace some Batteries Action Items May need cardboard for drying soap. May need small boxes or containers for taking soap home. Good time to get rid of recycling!

Students generally make 10-20 lbs of soap, roughly $75 – 160 in materials.
