Student Materials: Please bring the following: - Long, heavy pants - Long-sleeve shirt - Any bee gear you might already own (veil, gloves, etc.). The Folk School has several sets available. Hive tool and smoker will be provided by the school. ESTIMATED INSTRUCTOR MATERIALS FEE: $15 for honey, jars, and beeswax craft materials (time permitting on the latter)
School Materials: Beeyard with maintained hives - Bee package ( Susannah to budget & obtain) - Paper or plastic to cover inside tables on which honey may drip - Paper towels - School frames, supers, boxes, queen extruders, hive tools
Instructor Materials: - Personal bee tools & bee equipment - Beehive to be put together - Slides - Pollen trap - Extracting equipment - Honey - Jars - Beeswax - Craft molds & materials - Educational literature ESTIMATED INSTRUCTOR MATERIALS FEE: $15 for honey, jars, and beeswax craft materials (time permitting on the latter)
Equipment Needs: Wet Room - Hive tools - Smokers - matches - extra bee veils, jackets, and gloves - Slide projector and screen. (Confirmed -- slides, not digital.) Note: VA usually brings projector. Have ours available as back-up. - TV and DVD player - Outdoor work table, suitable for nailing together a beehive (picnic table outside studio) - Inside work area for extracting honey - Paper for covering indoor and outdoor tables - Sinks to wash extracting equipment Note: Class also makes beeswax crafts and will need sufficient table space and a stove for this. (There are plenty of tables in Wet Room.) Budget $200-$300 for 2 nucs and a package of bees. May need materials to repair frames, supers, and other pieces of equipment ($75) $200 - $300 for medication and treatment (varroa mites and other parasites) Carpet remnants to cover landscaping cloth (avoid having to mow and weed whack around hives) $100 for any replacement equipment needed Action items Please clean honey or wax off all surfaces.

Keeping bees can be a rewarding and profitable business or a fulfilling hobby. Take advantage of this hands-on opportunity to learn how to set up and maintain your own apiary. Explore building a beehive, installing a bee nucleus and a package of bees, harvesting honey, controlling disease and mites, requeening a hive, setting up a pollen trap, and managing a bee apiary year-round. Time permitting, explore applications such as making beeswax candles.
